This beautiful rare pine box dates back to the late 19th century and was produced by Alphonse Wogue and his business partner G. Levy, who were French game manufacturers of the era. It translates to “New Games Combined”. Their company eventually merged with others in 1904 to form Les Jeux et Jouets Français.
Around the turn of the century, it was common for game manufacturers to offer specially curated “New Year’s gift boxes” which were either simple wooden boxes filled with assorted small games or more refined game cases featuring beautifully presented board games. These sets were designed for family entertainment and became popular seasonal offerings during the early 1900s. This box no longer has the game contents but is a beautiful decorative piece and good for storage too. It has one clasp missing and can get slightly stuck when closed.
