A beautiful music box, circa 1930s, hand-carved in the classic Black Forest style. It’s shaped like a grape leaf bowl, with lovely detailed carving of a grape cluster at one end and a vine-style handle. The bowl sits on a pedestal which houses the Swiss musical movement. The music box is in excellent working order, with a wind-up key on the base. Can you imagine serving cheese or grapes on this at a dinner party!
Black Forest carving dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries in parts of Germany and Switzerland, where skilled woodworkers created decorative pieces inspired by the natural world around them. Leaves, vines, and woodland details like those seen here became a hallmark of the style. Pieces like this are still loved today for their warmth, craftsmanship, and timeless character.
