A beautiful 19th century porcupine quill box, handcrafted with carefully arranged natural porcupine quills (which are shed naturally so no porcupines are harmed) with an ebonised wooden frame and bone inlay. It has a sliding lid and a simple wooden interior, making it perfect for storing jewellery, letters or treasured keepsakes.
Porcupine quill boxes were produced throughout the 19th century, particularly in colonial India and Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka), where skilled artisans transformed naturally shed quills into striking decorative objects for the European market.
It is in superb condition with just two areas that may have a quill missing although it’s not clearly visible.
