This is a beautiful 19th century "Troika" papier mache trinket box. Troika trinket boxes have deep roots in Slavic folklore, featuring hand painted scenes of a traditional Russian carriage being pulled at speed by three horses. The creation of these miniature lacquer boxes gained global recognition after the Russian Revolution. Artists would often spend weeks on a single piece, layering them with multiple coats of clear lacquer to create a luminous, durable, and highly collectible keepsake intended for holding precious jewelry or storing cherished mementos. It is in lovely timeworn condtion inside and out but a real treasure.
