A stunning early 1900s silk top hat in beautiful condition with the makers mark inside as well as the owners initials embossed inside the hat and on the box. The original box (with a slot for the hat to fit within) is very weathered and worn and one part has come loose so you can't hold the box by its handle but how wonderful to have them together. The top hat is very small (perhaps it was even a childs top hat!) See dimensions below.
Did you know that National Hat Day in the UK is January 15th? It was that day in 1797, that an English haberdasher named John Hetherington caused a riot and was brought into custody for disturbing the peace. And why? It was Hetherington’s headwear, which had never been seen before.. a tall hat covered in black silk with a shiny lustre.
Oh the beauty of top hats! I adore them. Perfect as a decorative piece in the hallway or bedroom, with a lot of story.
