A beautiful atmospheric early 20th century pastel by Fred Stubbings showing a formal garden path bordered by beds of flowers in pinks, reds, blues, and soft whites in full bloom. It has a lovely simple gilt frame with a soft blue textured mount and behind glass. It is signed. Fred Stubbings was an English painter active in the early to mid 20th century, known especially for landscapes, gardens, and countryside scenes, often inspired by southern England. He worked in oils and pastels and exhibited at major venues including the Royal Academy. His work reflects the influence of Impressionism, particularly in its interest in light, color, and outdoor subjects.

I love the history of pastel - it was especially popular in the early 20th century because it allowed artists to work quickly and directly, often outdoors. Unlike oil paint, pastels required no drying time and could capture fleeting light and seasonal color with immediacy. Many artists valued pastel for its soft, velvety surface, which suited garden scenes, portraits, and landscapes like this one.
