I love the mysterious quality of this painting. I don’t usually buy paintings that have been painted based on original artworks but there is something about this painting that I love. Alchemy has an intrigue. The light, the mysterious positioning of the alchemist and the glass globe. The dark attic and the hint of the fire. I also love that the painter has not quite completed it - there are some line drawings on the right hand side. it is in good condition with a lovely gilt like frame. A few marks here and there. Age unknown.
Carl Spitzweg was a German romanticist painter, especially of genre painting. He is considered to be one of the most important artists of the Biedermeier era. He originally studied to be a pharmacist so would have understood chemistry.
“The Alchemist” was painted by Spitzweg in 1860. He selected a dark room and sparse light to paint the image in Rembrandt's manner whose work he had studied intensively.
