This wonderful late 19th century Scottish pine "creepie” stool has its original painted finish, with the surface worn beautifully over time, giving it a wonderful patina and rustic charm. Crafted in the traditional five-board style, each end features the gently arched cut-out that defines these vernacular pieces. Its simple, sturdy form was perfect for everyday practicality.
The term “creepie” comes from the word for a milking stool used in the Orkney Islands of Scotland and was designed to keep the sitter close to the ground. To “creep” refers to bending low, perfectly suited to its original use in rural settings.
