I adore antique boxes and this is a rare find. A 19th century, circa 1830s leather domed chest with a beautiful red interior and decorative metal studwork which is both practical and ornamental, reflecting a tradition dating back to Renaissance times.
Such boxes were commonly used to store letters, valuables, jewellery, or personal documents, and would have been found in private homes rather than for travel. The curved lid helped to protect the contents from dust and moisture. The surface has a deep, timeworn patina, with some marks and tears which adds to its historic charm. It is missing some studs and the latch on the top rim but is a stunning piece to add to a collection.
