A wonderful and unsual find. This is a gorgeous antique wooden sewing box featuring a parquetry-decorated lid that says "Workbox" in stencil like typography, likely dating from the late Victorian period, around the 1880s. Although marquetry and parquetry use similar woodworking techniques, marquetry focuses on creating pictorial designs in wood, while parquetry is centered on geometric patterns.

The exterior of the box is finished with a scumble paint technique and there are a few small chips in areas. The interior has a beautiful pink/purple paper lining. It is in wonderful antique condition and probably would have been used as a little sewing/crafts box. When open it does not stand but topples over. A lovely antique gift.
