A beautiful antique Bates, Gildea & Watson "Melbourne" pattern bowl dating from the late 1800s which is stamped at the base. It is ivory bodied and has a beautiful black floral design, very Aesthetic movement. A beautiful decorative piece for a plate stand or wall decor, great for practical use too or simply lying flat on a coffee table.
Bates, Gildea & Watson, were successors to G. & W. Late Mayers and were known for producing ceramic and ironstone pieces in the 19th century.
The "Melbourne" pattern name is visible, and the mark with the "R" and the numbers "1V 27" likely indicate a registration or pattern number and possibly a date code.
