This beautiful antique Indian dowry chest, traditionally known as a Majus or Damchiya, dates from the late 19th to early 20th century from the Gujarat region of Northern India. Its distinctive carved horse-head finials are a defining feature and symbolise strength and protection while showcasing the skill of the craftsmen.
Traditionally presented as part of a bride’s dowry, these chests were used to store treasured possessions such as jewellery, silk saris, fine textiles, and family heirlooms. More than just practical furniture, they were cherished symbols of family, prosperity, and skilled craftsmanship.
Handcrafted from teak, it has a beautiful aged patina, hand-forged iron hardware (the front lock can close but you have to fiddle an little) and beautifully detailed traditional carving.
It is perfect for storage - either in front of a bed to keep linen, in the bathroom to hold towels, as a coffee table or in a corner of the living room too. It is both functional and beautiful.
