The carved emblem on the lid shows the Prince of Wales feathers (three ostrich feathers emerging from a coronet) with the German motto "Ich Dien" I serve and a scroll inscribed with "Carabiniers". These little handcarved regimental boxes were often produced as trench art, souvenirs or personal boxes by or for British military personnel during World War Two and post-war.
