A beautifully crafted oversized early to mid 20th century French wooden artist’s mannequin, traditionally used in studios to help artists study human anatomy, proportion, and pose. Possibly carved from beechwood, these articulated figures, also known as “lay figures,” became popular in European art academies and studios in the 19th century, offering a practical alternative to live models.
Made with multiple jointed limbs and a stand, the mannequin can be posed in a variety of positions, making it an invaluable reference for figure drawing and composition. I love them as striking and slightly quirky decorative objects. It is slightly wobbly on the stand.
