I adore this piece of decorative history. I think it could've been used as silver chest, although it is quite rustic with interesting paint effect blue flecks and paper lining. Perhaps it was a family who had a few heirlooms to store but could not afford the grand chests used to keep silver and other precious items to keep them safe from staff turnover. Perhaps it is a treasure chest? The joy of finding pieces like this, is that the stories are never ending and your historical imagination can run wild. The detail on it is wonderful - all the original iron hardware from the lock to the handles and the elements on the lid. it is great for additional storage and also as a little sidetable next to an armchair.
