A charming and timeworn collection from one of the most celebrated botanical works ever published: English Botany, originally produced by James Sowerby in collaboration with the botanist James Edward Smith.
It was first issued in parts between 1790 and 1814, and continued into the 19th century. English Botany became a landmark publication in the study and illustration of British plant life. It is renowned for its beautifully detailed copper engravings, each carefully hand-coloured by artisans of the period. The work was originally sold in individual parts, which has led to many surviving example, like this one, existing today as incomplete collections of plates.
This particular book is in a timeworn, distressed condition, with the original binding, covers and spine heavily worn. However, it has a substantial number (111) of loose botanical plates that are also elegantly timeworn, each featuring beautiful illustrations of British flora. The plates show the delicate colouring and precise detail that made Sowerby’s work so admired.
